Jessica Herndon is an active music educator and performer in Milton, GA. Before switching to Summit Hill, she ran a studio of 40 piano and percussion students, ranging from 4-40 years old. Under her direction, Jessica’s students consistently earn Superior ratings at auditions, including National Federation of Music Clubs, NFMTA Local/Regional/State events, and Solo & Ensemble. Her percussion students audition into highly competitive performing organizations, including GMEA District Honor Band, Georgia All-State Band, Atlanta Youth Wind Symphony, and Atlanta Youth Percussion Ensemble. Many of her students have gone on to pursue music at the collegiate level, earning scholarships to pursue a degree in music.
Before her twins were born, Jessica served as the Director of Percussion at Cambridge High School. Under her direction, the Percussion Ensemble hosted Composer-In-Residence concerts featuring Ney Rosauro (2014) and Jim Casella (2015). In 2014, the Cambridge Marching Band performed in the London New Year’s Day Parade. Throughout her time as director, the Cambridge Drumline earned Superior Ratings at marching competitions.
Jessica also served as the Assistant Band Director at Northwestern Middle School, where she co-taught 6th Grade Band and taught 7th Grade General Music. While at NMS, the band had the opportunity to perform at UGA’s MidFest and Southern Star Music Festival. Jessica has also worked with the Front Ensemble of the world class Milton Indoor Drumline.
Jessica graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Georgia in 2010 with a Bachelor's degree in Music Education (percussion) and Music Performance (piano). While a student at UGA, Jessica studied with Dr. Thomas McCutchen, Dr. Ryan Smith, and Dr. Evgeny Rivkin. As a pianist, Jessica has remained an active collaborative artist. She has performed with the salsa group "One Ton Tomato," and has collaborated with many churches, high school, middle school, and elementary school programs. While at UGA, she was involved in multiple performing ensembles, including the UGA Percussion Ensemble, "Tropical Breeze" Steel Drum Band, UGA Salsa Band, and UGA Wind Ensemble. In the summer of 2010, she toured Argentina with the UGA Wind Ensemble. Jessica played percussion with the Cobb Wind Symphony, which performed as a guest ensemble at the GMEA Music Educators Conference (2011) and the Midwest International Band and Orchestra Conference (2011).
Jessica’s professional affiliations include North Fulton Music Teacher’s Association (Historian-elect), Georgia Music Teacher's Association, Georgia Music Educator’s Association, and Percussive Arts Society. She is an Innovative Percussion endorsed educator.
Jessica lives in Milton with her husband, John (fellow music educator), three kids, and many pets!
